Morning Tour (9:30 – 13:00)
- Bamboo Train
Said to be “one of the world’s all time unique rail journeys” (Lonely Planet), the Bamboo Train is one of Battambang’s most popular tourist attractions. Climb on board a single open carriage with a bamboo floor and speed full steam ahead along the 7km, rickety track. This journey takes 20 minutes each way, passing through rural countryside and over rustic bridges left by the French. There is only one track on this railway system, meaning that when two carriages meet head on one is quickly dissembled allowing the other to pass – watch in fascination and be sure to get a video of this!
- Fishing village
The province of Battambang has 37 fishing communities, each with over 300 members. Visit a humble fishing village occupied by Vietnamese Muslims. This village sits on the riverbank and is decorated with numerous shanty huts and half sunken fishing boats. Learn about the history and culture of the Vietnamese village people from your tour guide, Kamnat.
- Ancient house
Take a guided tour through a traditional 1920’s Khmer style house, led by a descendant of the original family owners. During the reign of the Khmer Rouge, this house was taken over and occupied as a place for producing rice, storing heavy equipment and preparing food for the soldiers. Listen to the family stories it holds within its walls, each passed down from one generation to the next. The property is home to antique French furniture and ornate musical instruments, which you will discover as you explore the rooms.
- Flying Fox
As well as the small wrinkle nosed bats, the Battambang province is home to fruit bats. Fruit bats are much larger in size, which is why they are also known as flying foxes. Instead of sleeping in caves, the flying foxes hang from trees whilst sleeping through the day and take flight in the evening in search for fresh fruit. Some people believe that blood from the flying fox can be used as a male stimulant – instead of Viagra. The wealthier locals will pay up to $100 for flying fox blood. Witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat, close to the Banan Temple.
- Visit AKD
This is the life project of your Tour guide Kamnat. You will get an inside view to a non profit education project for unpriviliged children in Cambodia. School activities starts at 1pm with the youngest children. You could join earlier and talk to some current volunteers about their work and daily life at AKD. This is an optional stop of the day. If you are not interested in feel free to cut it out.
Afternoon Tour (14:00 – 18:00)
- Ek Phnom temple
Built in the early eleventh century – AD 1027, the Wat Ek Phnom temple is located 14km away from Battambang provincial town. The temple was built under the Hindu religion and has now become somewhat dilapidated. After being looted, many of the Buddha heads were stolen, leaving a ghostly eeriness behind. Your tour guide Kamnat will take you through this temple on a guided tour, explaining about the religion and what the intricate stone carvings represent.
- Banan temple
Standing at the bottom of 300 steps, you will look upwards and marvel at this 400 meter high, mountain top temple. But the climb is definitely worth it. The pay off when you get to the top is a stunning view of the surrounding countryside. There are five temple structures to this historic gem, with the middle being the largest. Unfortunately, as is in most Cambodian temples, many of the decorative carvings here have been looted by the Khmer Rouge. However, the spirit of this building remains intact, and shouldn’t be missed.
- Killing cave
From the top a steep hill in Phnom Sampeau, ruled by the monkeys on the lookout for your snacks, you will descend by foot, stopping off at numerous caves on the way down. But these are no ordinary caves. During the rule of the Khmer Rouge, this hill was turned into a prison. The caves are a graveyard for countless innocent victims, who were tortured and bludgeoned to death by the evil reign. See the skulls and bones left behind and learn about the Khmer Rouge. Kamnat will explain to you the meanings behind the memorials and the stories of the Cambodian people who were so ruthlessly killed there.
- Bat cave (top tour)
At the bottom of the Killing Cave is one which cannot be reached. It is home to over 6 million wrinkle lipped bats. Every night at sunset, each one of these mystic flying creatures come swarming from the mouth of the cave, on the lookout for food. Have a seat on the benches at the foot of the cave opening and enjoy a refreshing drink whilst you wait patiently for this spectacular sight.
